ST Launches General Election 2011 Website

A One-Stop online portal dedicated to the upcoming General Election (GE), with the breaking news and the latest photos and videos, is being launched by Straits Times.

The site at www.straitstimes.com/ge2011 provides a comprehensive range of information that voters can use, including an interactive electoral map which shows them the political parties  contesting in their respective constituencies.

Explaining the reason for the new venture, ST editor Han Fook Kwang said: "The election is probably the biggest local story of the year, and we aim to serve our readers in the best possible way we can, both in the paper and online."

He added: "Online, we want to deliver the news fast, as it breaks, and with the trademark Straits Times quality for accuracy and reliability."

The list of features is long, but one highlight is the extensive multimedia coverage, with photo galleries and video coverage of events in the run-up to Nomination Day and then of the rallies leading to Polling Day.

For instance, expect swift uploads of videos showing the unveiling of new candidtates and of politicians at the hustings.  Said Mr Han: "We intend t make full use of our video capability, so readers can see and hear for themselves how the candidates perform and handle themselves."

Also available are write-ups that give insights into the state of the ground at various constituencies and a database that contains such information as the results of the last general election and the rules for campaigning.

A "Frequently Asked Questions" section will provide quick answers on the election process.

Until Nomination Day, is "Who's Who" section will be continually updated to keep readers in the know on the confirmed and yet-to-be-confirmed candidates from each political party.

Nearer Polling Day an "Election Watch" section will be update readers on the events and rallies taking place across Singapore.  ST reporters will also write blogs to give on-the-ground perspecties.

While there are other websites and bogs covering the General Election, Mr Han is confident ST's portal will stand out: "We have the largest and most experienced newsroom in Singapore, with many reporters who have been tracking this GE for months now, and we have been the first to break many of the GE related stories."

He added: "We promise many more to come when the campaign begins."

Mr Felix Soh, digital media editor of Singapore Press Holdings' English and Malay newspapers division said the site's clean design would make it easy for users to navigate its rich content.

"Everything is at your fingertips.  Even from just the homepage, you can easily access all the information available on the site.

Readers can even look forward to a free general election iPhone application soon. This app will suit people who are on the go and who want information about the election. Anywhere you are, you can get that information with just a few swipes of your finger.

"Best of all, it will be free."

Cannot Vote?

Here is what will happen.  Those who do not vote will be struck off electoral register.

Most people know that voting is compulsory in Singapore, but some have no idea what happens to them if they miss the general election.

The question is looming large since one likely date for Polling Day that has been  cited by pundits is Apr 30. which falls on a long weekend when more people are expected to be out of the country.

This year's election will also see more seats contested by the opposition.  This means that more voters could be caught out by their holiday plans.

Indeed travel agencies here say that Apr and May are usually peak travel periods because of the Labour Day break, with a general spike of 20 percent in travel demand to places such as Hong Kong, Thailand and Vietnam.

This is why at least one of them, CTC Travel, has found it necessary to advise its customers on the dos and don'ts if they did miss their chance to vote.

Way back in Feb, CTC Travel already prepared a list of commonly asked questions, related to the impending General Election.

This included a list of valid reasons for not voting, which can incidentally be found on the Elections Department website.

For example people who had made travel plans before Polling Day is announced will be struck off the electoral register of eligible voteres for the next election if they do not show up to vote at the next elections.

Those without valid reasons will need to pay $50 to regain the right to vote at the next elections.

According to the Elections Department, it is compulsory for all eligible citizens to caste their vote at the residential elections or parliamentary elections, if their constituency is contested.

There is no provision in the law to exempt any voter. Those who are eligible and do not vote are not only struck off the register but are also disqualified from running as candidates in future elections.

What Happen If You Did Not Vote?

According to the Elections Department, it is compulsory for eligible citizens to vote in presidential elections or parliamentary elections, if their constituencies are contested.

A registration officer will remove the name of those who do not show up on Polling Day from the certified register of electors of the constituencies they belong to.

Those struck off the list cannot vote at any subsequent presidential or parliamentary election.  They are also barred from being candidates in any subsequent presidential or parliamentary election.

Those who want to be put back on the list must approach the registration officer with an explanation.  They can submit their applications online at the Elections Department website, at its Prinsep Link office or any community club.

After every general election, the Elections Department typically sends out letters to non-voters informing them that they may apply for their names to be restored.

If there was no valid reason for a voter not voting, the department will impose a $50 fine, which needs to be paid before the voter can be reinstated.

Valid reasons for not voting include working overseas at the time of the poll, studying overseas, being on an overseas vacation planned before the polls, being ill, or delivering a baby.

Documents must be produced to support such claims, such as passport or letter fro the school, or a medical certificate.

A voter cannot submit an application to be reinstated once a writ of election has been issued for his constituency.

So do you have a clearer picture of "To Vote or Not To Vote?  The choice is yours.
